Since its introduction in 1995 the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) has seen the phased implementation of requirements to encourage inclusivity in the workplaces and areas of service provision. Despite most organisations embracing the legislation and spending on access audits and adjustments, too many are still missing the fundamental message.
In reality meeting the requirements isn’t about having an accessible washroom, a car parking space, a portable ramp, and an induction loop. It’s about making sure that where provided these facilities are usable, that where drafted policies meet the needs of everybody, and that all relevant staff are appropriately trained.
A survey carried out a number of years ago, and some adjustments made to a number of services or potential ‘barrier’, is unlikely to demonstrate either pro-activity or commitment. The legislation is anticipatory, therefore you need to consider in advance what you need to do.
Our services have been specifically designed to help you integrate both strategic and operational needs. From policy or access statements to training and getting the physical dimensions of car parking spaces correct (many don’t!), all is covered. We offer practical, realistic solutions for ongoing management. How does your DDA measure up currently?
