As we operate from one location and do not manufacture products, our impact on the environment is minimal. We have used our environmental management system to reduce the impact our business has on the environment. We had a new member of staff driving our environmental goals in 2009 and ensuring we maintain our ISO 14001 accreditation.
Our recycling of hazardous waste, paper and cardboard, confidential waste and electrical waste has continued in 2009. Our recycling initiatives do not provide us with any cost savings, however we believe them to be important to minimise waste to landfill.
In our 2008 report we stated that we would aim to reduce CO emissions from our car fleet and resume plastic bottle recycling from our laboratory. The carbon emissions from our car fleet have fallen due to staff making personal choices to choose cars with lowers emissions and industry development. We admit that this has not been driven internally however we will be looking at this in 2010.
Unfortunately we have been unable to resume plastic recycling from our laboratory as our search for another company to collect the bottles at a sustainable cost has been unsuccessful.
Our environmental programme which has led to us gaining ISO 14001 accreditation, has created savings in paper and fuel. This includes a 30% reduction on our premises gas bill between 2008 and 2009. We are improving the way we record this information so that we can see long term trends over the coming years as fuel use is also weather and cost dependant.
A project plan in now in place to integrate ISO 14001 with our other quality systems in addition to ISO 18001.
